Books to be referred on 3G
As a fresher when i joined Alcatel-Lucent, i was quite struggling with Abbreviations and jargons used in this field. Beside some words like WCDMA , SIR(which we mostly encounter in our Engg. course) almost every word was quite stranger to me. Suggestion from senior members were to go through presentations and read 3GPP specification but I thought of switching to books first and then to spec. Now choosing book is also a tough task to start with but here are some suggestions from my side:
My personal favorites are
1. Introduction to 3G mobile communications by Juha Korhonen
2. WCDMA For UMTS by Harri Holma and Anti Toskala
The first one explains the physical related stuffs in a better way where as the 2nd one has protocols part and Layer2 and above related topics covered in better manner.
From the First book as a beginner chapters 8,9,10,12,13,14,15(As per the 2nd edition ) can be skipped but rest all chapters are a must read.
If you have already gone through the 1st book the content to be read from the 2nd book will be bit lesser. Chapters 12,13,14,15 (4th edition) are a must read chapters from this book as they cover HSPA and LTE related topics.
If protocols (like NBAP,SCCP,SSCOP, RANAP,FP etc etc ) used in different layers of WCDMA technology bothers you even after reading these above books (as they bothered me a lot even after reading above books) I prefer reading the book “Convergence technologies for 3G Networks by Jeffrey Bannister,Paul Mather and Sebastian Coope” . Chapter 6 contains all these information’s in a pleasant way. The one which bothered me most was AAL(ATM Adaption Layer) and SSCOP(I was quite scared to these two words as I was not able to find explanations explicitly dedicated to these layers). But this book contains all these information.
For Core Network related info chapter 9 of above book is also a must read.
Beside these books 3GPP specs obviously has to be read as there only you will be able to find IEs (Information elements) related to each protocols.
Some blogs also contains good information on this technology.
www.3g4g.co.uk is one of my favorite , beside those www.3gpp.org site is also a must read for keeping yourself updated with new news on 3G and 4G.
Readers are welcome to suggest another books .....
Thanks…
